–Ballpark figure (estimación)
Es un número o cantidad estimada, sin que se quiera decir un número exacto.
If you can’t tell them the exact amount, give them the ballpark figure. (si no puedes decirles la cantidad exacta, dales una estimación)
–The ball is in your court (la pelota está en tu tejado)
Se usa para decirle a alguien que es su turno de hacer algo.
You told her how you feel, the ball is in her court now (Le dijiste como te sentías, la pelota está en su tejado ahora)
–Call the shots (estar a cargo)
Ser el responsable de algo o quien dice lo que hacer.
Jennifer is calling the shots since the boss is sick today. (Jennifer está a cargo hoy dado que el jefe está enfermo)
–Give it your best shot (hazlo lo mejor que puedas)
Hacer algo lo mejor que se pueda o al cien por cien.
If you want to pass this exam, you should give it your best shot. (Si quieres aprobar el examen, tienes que hacerlo lo mejor que puedas)
–Go the distance (llegar al final)
Ser persistente y terminar algo que habías comenzado.
The two companies should try and go the distance in reaching an agreement on this issue. (Las dos compañías deberían intentar y llegar a un acuerdo sobre este problema)
–Have the upper hand ( tener una ventaja)
Poseer una ventaja sobre tu adversario o tener la autoridad en algún asunto.
The thief had the upper hand since he had the knife. (El ladrón tenía ventaja dado que tenía un cuchillo)
–Hit below the belt (jugar sucio)
Dar un golpe bajo, ser injusto en algo para ganar una ventaja.
Trump hit Hillary below the belt with his comment. (Trump jugó sucio contra Hillary con sus comentarios)
–Hit the ground running (arrancar a toda marcha)
Comenzar inmediatamente con algo, también se utiliza para decir que alguien sabe lo que hace.
She hit the ground running when she started her new job. (Ella comenzó a toda marcha cuando empezó su nuevo trabajo)
–Be off base (estar fuera de lugar)
Estar equivocado sobre algo.
The figures in this report seem to be off base. Will you check them out again? (Los números de este informe parecen erróneos, ¿podrías comprobarlos de nuevo?
–Take time out (descansar)
Tomarse algo de tiempo libre para hacer algo diferente de lo que se suele hacer.
You’ve been working too hard lately, why don’t you take some time out? (Has estado trabajando mucho últimamente, ¿Por qué no te tomas tiempo libre?
